The Port of Narvik is investing in a new cruise pier in the centre of town. Work will commence this autumn and completion is scheduled for the first half of 2019.

Built in two stages, the pier will be 150m in length when completed and be able to accommodate ships up to 350m in length. “As the pier will be located at the end of the current Pier 1 (forming a T), the ships will dock far enough from land to prevent any restrictions, commented Grethe Parker, cruise coordinator Cruise Narvik.

The land-based facilities will not be completed at the same time but plans include facilities for the crew, a small market place and a tourist information booth.

The ISPS gates are already in place as the existing pier is an active one where smaller ships already dock. Water and garbage handling will be available and the new pier will have specifications for future development of greywater waste-handling systems which is presently being disposed of by truck.

The new pier will allow passengers to walk into town and there will no longer be a need for shuttle buses. There is plenty of space for buses and logistics operations.

Narvik is gradually building up infrastructure in order to welcome more visitors to the region. With the new pier and the gondola it is well on its way.
