The port of Bordeaux, the world’s wine capital, attracts more and more ocean cruises but river cruises are now on the increase too. A total of five river cruiseships presently sail on the Garonne, the Dordogne and the Gironde Estuary.

Cyrano de Bergerac, Bon Voyage, AmaDolce, Viking Forseti and Scenic Diamond operate from March to November, offering a trip between river and vineyards. From 110m to 135m long, these river ships accommodate between 90 and 200 passengers.

During a five- or seven-day cruise, passengers can discover Bordeaux, a city with over 350 buildings UNESCO-listed or registered historical monuments, and enjoy its lifestyle: the southern gastronomy, wine bars, terraces, markets, shops, festivities etc.

Passengers can also enjoy mixing nature, wine and culture: the terroir for the ‘grands crus’ of Medoc, Saint Emilion and Sauternes but also, for example, the Citadel of Blaye or the Cussac Fort designed by Vauban and listed World Heritage sites by UNESCO.

In 2020 passengers will be able to enjoy a new jewel of the Aquitaine Region on the opposite bank of the Gironde estuary: Royan, capital of the Cote de Beaute close to the famous Cognac region.

With its new 54m long pontoon, the port of Royan can accommodate two river cruiseships of up to 135m each, with shorepower connection.

A call in Royan provides a new opportunity to discover this town of art and history that was completely rebuilt in the 1950s, following the bombings of the Second World War. Looking out to the Atlantic ocean, Royan’s surroundings also offer unspoilt natural landscapes, beaches and a wealth of flora and fauna to be discovered on a bicycle tour, or on a day out at La Palmyre Zoo.

One of the river cruise companies settled in Bordeaux has already programmed various calls in Royan for 2020 season and there are bound to be others which follow that lead.
